The upcoming Concussion film will become the catalyst that changes America forever. The NFL will be concussed, and there will be no “Concussion Protocol” that will save it from its demise and eventual destruction. As the say, “the barbarians are already at the gates.” More accurately, they will be at the movie gates this Christmas.
Will Smith has played many characters and in doing so has mastered his craft. When you portray a real person that highlights an issue that affects the vast majority of Americans every week, and for the seriously injured, 24\7 watch and physical care, and you are addressing the sport that has become “America’s game” from Pop Warner to High School, to College to Semi-Pro to NFL\CNFL. you are taking on a multi-billion dollar industry, thousands of jobs, the educational, medical, and political establishment. A lot of money, power, and the legacy of a beloved sport is at stake.
I want to see this film, this dramatization of true events, personalities of athletes who played the game and suffered horribly from CTE. It will have a huge impact on me and I know that it will forever change me.
Two things are likely to happen with me. My watching of the NFL will decrease, as will my taste for it, and the distaste will eventually become dislike which will lead to my ceasing of watching and following the game. I will abandon being an ardent fan of the game.
The NFL is terrified of the impact and outcome of the discussion that CTE injuries will generate, especially to it’s fan base and the families who children play the game at every level. The film will lead a movement to ban the game.
I can see lobbying and the health and health insurance industry, as well as motivated politicians, leading to the eventual demise of football as we see it today, and it will be eliminated as a sport.
People are going to conclude, and rightfully so, that football is a very dangerous game at every level of play, and an athlete’s life can be changed for the worse forever, and have their life shortened considerably from repeated blows and concussions.
Football will die a slow and painful death as athlete’s abandon the sport, as advertisers stop advertising the game, as schools are pressured to cease playing the game, as parents put their kids into other sports, and lastly as fans likely decide they have had enough and walk away.
In my heart of hearts I know that my conscience will not let me keep watching. I know I will walk away and I know it will be the right thing to do, for the right reasons, and it will be a most difficult thing to do. I also know that players, parents and fans like me will do likewise and that scares the crap out of the NFL.
The demise and collapse of football will come upon American life like the coming of the Apocalypse!
