One of my favorite actors has passed away at age 83. Omar Sharif, beloved actor who graced English language cinema in David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and who played the tragic lover in Lean’s Doctor Zhivago. Who can forget him in Funny Girl with Barbara Streisand.
Rest in Peace Omar Sharif. Your legacy of film will continue to thrill and inspire.
He was a great character actor, and so much so, he took any role that pleased him to do, from heroes to villains, from historical figures like Ghenghis Khan and Che. He played a priest in Behold A Pale Horse. He refused to be typecast. He played Hispanics, Jews, Russians, and Arabs as well as a host of others. All together he was in some 90 films.
He became a life-long friend of Peter O’toole his co-star in Lawrence of Arabia.
I remember so many roles in which his persona captured the role and so many of the scenes he was in. I remember him with O’Toole in The Night of the Generals, where O’Toole plays a deviant Nazi General Tanz, and Sharif plays a German investigator Major Grau, in pursuit of crimes committed by the general. It was a great role in a great film. One of my favorite.
R.I.P. Omar Sharif. Peace and prayers of comfort to your family, friends and fans.
