John 5:19 ~ Living Hearing The Voice of God Daily

For the last twenty years, I have found myself going to particular scriptures over and over again, only to realize just how much each of these scriptures that I thought I know and comprehended and applied to my life, were all the more rich and all the more profound all at once.  Just when I would think I knew this verse, and had received revelation on its application to my life, the Lord by His Spirit would flip it and show me a whole angle of understanding I had not thought of before.  Also wrapped up with another angle there was usually a whole other revelation that would lead to a whole other journey of discovery, understanding and application that up until that moment was unthought of.

Such is the case with John 5: 19:

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Now here I am with a group of eight to twelve believers (depending on the week) that are part of this new church plant, and in the midst of it, this passage again comes to the for through our relationship with a dynamic Spirit filled and led media ministry in New Bern, North Carolina. My good friends Brent and Natalie Engelman from the New Bern Church,  N.C. .

Last night during a night of Internet based neworking, the Prophetic Training Webinar, Brent did a teaching on this very scripture. He called us to walk this out, pausing to listen to the Lord, and to hear His voice, and to clearly engage in asking particular questions, and waiting to hear the answer from the Lord.  Over forty people from around the world were engaged in this exercise and it was an incredible moment, to realize we were all so focused on the voice of Jesus, that we shut out all the other competing voices, and quieted our spirits, so that we could truly hear and know His voice on the matters we brought before Him.

It very much reminded me of the promise that follows verse 19.  In John 5 we read in verse 20:

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.

This is our promise right from Jesus, and it is an anointed promise with His anointing emblazoned and glorified on it, from stem to stern. Think on this promise:

  • The Father loves the Son
  • The Father shows ALL he does
  • The Father will show him even GREATER works than these
  • We will be amazed

Jesus brings this to the fore in John 14:

11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

So here Jesus endorses and promises what we will do:

  • The Son is in the Father and the Father is in the Son
  • Believe in the evidence of the signs, wonders, miracles, healings even if you don’t believe in the Son
  • Whoever believes in Jesus, WILL DO THE WORKS He has been doing
  • They will do GREATER WORKS, because He was going and has gone to the Father
  • Whateve you ask in Jesus’ name, will be done so that the Father may be glorified in Jesus

So this is what is so critical for furthering and extending the Kingdom of God in the nations.  We must embrace:

1) Who we are in Christ

2) Know the authority we have in Christ, in the finished work of the cross and the sanctified work of the Spirit in our lives

3) Exercise faith, implicit trust in Jesus, and believe that He will do, that His Spirit within us, will do the “greater works” through us as we submit and yield to the leading of His Spirit within us. The word “pistuo” is the same word for “faith”, “trust” and “believe”.

4) All ministry that is accomplished through this is for the glory of the Father through Jesus.

We become partakers in the work of the Spirit of Jesus, whenever we proclaim, and declare healing, restoration, deliverance, miracles.  The Greek word “sozo” means “salvation”, “healing” and “deliverance”.  The whole package is provided for through the finished work of the cross, and through that atonement, “at-one-moment” ALL provision was secured for our salvation, healing and deliverance.

The challenge we face as believers, and as Luther said, as “little Christs”, is that our inner “stuff” and our “theological paradigms” often get in the way of the finished work of the cross being full appropriated and walked out in our lives, often limiting the effectiveness of the power of the Spirit and finished work of the cross.

When we pray for people to receive healing and deliverance, we should just as readily proclaim the fullness of the salvation that Jesus died for, for them and all the people that have ever and will ever live. Such grace was poured out from Immanuel’s veins when He freely laid down His life for us.

This is why living out that John 5:19 verse is an important part of our armour as we walk with the Lord and He walks with us, that we be so fine tuned in relationship with Him, and so intimate with Him, that we feel the heat of His breath upon us, as He delights to touch and heal and restore people by the power of His Spirit.

My desire is to see brothers and sisters within the Body of Christ fully walk out this John 5:19 reality moment by moment. All glory be to the Lord Jesus, our Yeshua Ha Masciah!
