Emerging Tolerance

EMERGING VALUES ~ TOLERANCE

One of the emergent values is tolerance.  Many speak of tolerance, but it is another thing to actually practice tolerance.  Tolerance includes acceptance of individuals as they are, not trying to change them, but rather trying to understand them and their ideals and views.

It means reaching out and engaging with those we would otherwise not engage with. It means operating from a position of grace and openness to those who are different than ourselves.

It means minimizing the differences long enough to hear each other and understand each other, so that constructive and instructive dialog can take place for the benefit of all concerned.  This dialog breaks down walls of division, and diminishes issues of difference allowing movement in otherwise intransigent situations.

In many instances there are more things in common than in difference, when we take enough time, patience, and care to build bridges with those who are different than ourselves.
